. christmas break is already over for president obama. he's flying back to washington tonight and aides say he's ready for a deal. it's not clear whether this trip is a sign of compromises to come or another display of theater showing the president is willing to work even as his opponents skip town. meanwhile, though, americans are growing skeptical. in the last week alone, gallup found a 15-point drop in the number of americans who think congress will negotiate a deal on the fiscal cliff. that's not all, holiday spending also hit its lowest rate since the 2008 recession, which retailers are blaming on the uncertainty in washington. so where do we go from here? well, since the house failed to get a vote on the tax package last week, all eyes are on the senate. a temporary deal that would basically extend all the tax cuts for those making under a quarter million. the deal would also rescue long-term unemployment benefits and instead of addressing those automatic spending cuts we've all heard about that are set for january 1st, this temporary deal would delay them for another six months. few are

president obama who had been concerned that they were not going to act and challenging them for an up and down vote said he was optimistic. here's the president after that meeting. >> i just had a good and constructive discussion at the white house with senate and house leadership about how to prevent this tax hike on the middle class and i'm optimistic we may still be able to reach an agreement that can pass both houses in time. >> now what would be in that mini deal? we're talking about tax increases for people at near the top of the income scale. the question is the threshold, 400 or $500,000 are the likely places that that could end up. it would likely turn off the automatic sequester by using some of the revenue from the tax increases to account as budget cuts and turn off they is quester and it would also extend unemployment benefits and do the so-called doc fix to prevent reimbursements from declining and also have a milk fix, michelle that would prevent the doubling of milk prices which would occur without an extension of subsidies. >> why aren't people more optimistic? i have

tomorrow. hawaii is said goodbye to a much-respected native son. daniel inouye. president obama attended inouye's funeral yesterday, along with other washington insiders, including his friend senator harry reid. he represented hawaii in congress ever since it became a state in 1959 and was the second-longest serving senator in u-s history. inouye received the medal of honor for his heroism during world war two. inouye died a week ago at accepts total responsibility senator michael crapo was arrested in virginia shortly after midnight, saturday night. alexandria police say the idaho republican ran a red light, then failed several field sobriety tests. police say crapo's blood alcohol level was point-one- one ; the legal limit for drivers in virginia is point-oh-eight. in a statement released by his office, crapo said he was -- quote -- "deeply sorry for the actions that resulted in this limit in virginia. the deputy police chief says an investigation is underway to determine whether the killing was intentional or accidental. it was not known whether the victim was a military orthe nato mi
